Wool
An old favourite, wool has been used as a floorcovering ever since some clever folks from Central Asia first wove it during the 2nd - 3rd Millennium BC. Interestingly, the English carpet-making industry started with a display of religious tolerance when, in the 16th Century, Protestants from France and Flanders sought refuge from persecution at home.
