Coir
Ever wondered what happens to all the hair on the outside of a coconut? Well if it comes anywhere near us, we turn it into carpet.
The coconut fibre cells are coated in cellulose and lignin, which makes them coarse and tough. Anyway, the fibres are washed and dried before being woven into any of the patterns you see below. The result is a simple yet effective flooring covering which is at home in both the country cottage and the penthouse appartment.
Did you know? - The word coir is pronounced by some people as if it were French in origin, e.g. "kwa". Well they're wrong. The word actually comes from the Malayalam kayar, which means "cord". So there you go.
